Common Myths

Beliefs we learned (when growing up) that have scientifically been proven false.

You have to workout everyday until you are soaked in sweat to be healthy and fit. Absolutely false.

Fact. Doing too much (intense) cardio, such as running or cycling, can actually cause your metabolism to slow down. A balance of cardio and lifting weights is the most effective combination to promote weight loss and/or maintain a goal weight.

You have to eat perfect 100% of the time to stay at your goal weight. Not true.

Fact. There is a time and place for everything. Moderation is the key. You should never feel like you can’t enjoy life because your nutrition has to be so regimented. Celebrate a birthday, enjoy dinner out with friends, have fun at a friend’s wedding…but jump right back on the bandwagon for the next meal. Don’t let one less nutritious meal turn into two, then turn into three…which turns into days, weeks, and months. You owe it to yourself to fuel your body with healthy foods. It makes you feel good. And, when you feel good about yourself, it starts to affect every facet of your life.

I will never be able to get to my goal weight since I am older now. Completely not true.

Fact. As we age, our bodies start to change. Accumulation of extra weight can appear in places where it had not before. But, with balanced nutrition and healthy movement, we can all attain and maintain a healthy weight. Your body may look slightly different in the mirror than it did 20 years ago. But, that’s the beauty of aging and changing. We are always evolving… and getting that much better.

Eating fat is bad for you. False.

Fact. Fat is an essential macro and building block of a balanced and healthy nutrition plan. And, in fact, if you are not eating enough fat in your diet, your body will not lose weight. There is a difference between healthy fats (monounsatured and polyunsaturated fats) and unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats) which needs to be applied. But, bottom line, healthy fats are good for your cholesterol, heart, and overall health. So, enjoy a delicious piece of salmon, an avocado, some cashews…and don’t feel bad about it!
